A 32-year-old dispatch rider, Emmanuel Jegede, has reportedly been killed by suspected hoodlums who allegedly pushed him off his motorcycle while attempting to extort money from him in Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at about 10am along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.
Jegede was reportedly on his way to another destination after completing a delivery when tragedy struck at the Alhaja area.
According to an eyewitness, the rider had earlier been involved in a minor collision with a tricycle rider after emerging from a street in the area.
Residents and some youths, including the suspected hoodlums, reportedly intervened and settled the dispute.
But the situation allegedly took a deadly turn when the suspects demanded money from Jegede for mediating the matter.
The eyewitness said the rider told them he had no money on him, allegedly provoking the suspects.
The source said the suspects later confronted Jegede again as he rode along the Ikotun-Idimu Road and allegedly pushed him while the motorcycle was still in motion.
“The rider was passing through the Ikotun-Idimu Road, and when he got to Alhaja, two hoodlums who usually stay around the junction tried to stop him and suddenly pushed him while he was in motion.
“He lost control of the motorcycle, veered off the road and rammed into the median. By the time people got to the spot to rescue him, he had already died,” the source said.
The eyewitness added that Jegede’s chest reportedly slammed into a culvert with great force as he tried to escape from the suspects, leading to his instant death.
The suspected hoodlums reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Policemen from the Idimu Police Division later arrived at the scene and evacuated the deceased’s body.
The incident has reportedly caused tension among residents, while the circumstances surrounding the rider’s death are still being investigated.
