The family of a Germany-based businessman, Solomon Iwerebor, has raised the alarm over the circumstances surrounding his death, demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged involvement of his brother and sister-in-law.
The deceased’s brother, Justin, and his wife, Anthonia, were arrested on Monday over the businessman’s suspected murder. Solomon was reportedly staying with the couple before his death.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Solomon’s sisters, Stella Iwerebor and Udo Hamis, alongside their lawyer, Dr Charles Mekwunye, SAN, expressed fears that the circumstances surrounding his death could be covered up.
They demanded that the police establish how he died, locate his remains and prosecute anyone found culpable.
The family disclosed that Solomon, who lived in Germany with his wife and children, had not been seen by other relatives for more than two years after travelling to Nigeria to visit Justin and his wife.
They said they only learnt of his death through third parties on September 6, several days after he reportedly died.
The sisters further alleged that they were never informed of any illness he might have suffered before his death and had been unable to establish the hospital where he was allegedly treated or locate his remains.
They described the situation as deeply disturbing, particularly as they had lost one brother while another brother and his wife had become suspects in the circumstances surrounding the death.
The family insisted that their demand was for justice and a transparent investigation, urging the police not to allow anyone to interfere with the process.
Before the arrests, the law firm of Mekwunye had petitioned the Lagos State Police Command, calling for a thorough investigation into Solomon’s death.
The petition sought details of the hospital in Benin City, Edo State, where he was allegedly treated, his medical records and the whereabouts of his remains.
However, after the matter was referred to the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, and the suspects were invited, the family alleged that the Zone 2 Command attempted to take over the investigation.
The development prompted the family to petition the Inspector-General of Police on October 23, 2026.
In the petition, they alleged that the suspects had refused to honour police invitations at Panti.
They also questioned the proposed transfer of the investigation to Zone 2, arguing that the command did not have a homicide division.
The family consequently asked the IGP to return the case to Panti and direct that the final investigation report be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation for appropriate legal action.
Following the arrests, the family warned against any attempt to secure the suspects’ premature release or compromise the investigation.
They also demanded that the police establish the whereabouts of Solomon’s remains and ensure they were not moved, buried, cremated or otherwise disposed of in a manner that could frustrate investigations.
The family further called for an autopsy and other forensic examinations to determine the actual cause of death, insisting that all unanswered questions surrounding the businessman’s final days must be addressed.
