The Federal Government has threatened to prosecute promoters of illegal higher institutions across the country.

The Education minister Mallam Adamu Adamu issued the threat on Friday while addressing the media in Abuja.

Adamu bemoaned the prevalence of institutions of higher learning operating illegally, giving their number as 134 among whom are 66 universities, 68 polytechnics and Monotechnics.

Speaking of the need for a paradigm shift, the minister said government has resolved to deal ruthlessly with the operators, saying “Let me warn those promoting illegal institutions that the days of treating such institutions with kid gloves are over. Anyone caught in the act will be severely punished.

“I must add that the processes of accreditation of tertiary institutions have been streamlined and  there is no reason whatsoever for any institution not to come forward for proper accreditation.

“Promoters of such institutions should be immediately be apprehended and persecuted.”
