The federal government is seeking to introduce tuition fees in federal universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions following the signing of the Student Loan Bill by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Federal government owned schools are tuition-free, a situation that is about to give way, by the sound of Clause 3 of the Students Loan Act in respect of the higher institutions, which reads thus: “The loans referred to in this Act shall be granted to students only for the payment of tuition fees.”
The tuition-free model in public schools has long been in existence.
