The federal government would reportedly make N3bn from the registration of SIM cards with National Identity Numbers, NIN, by phone users.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the instance of the federal government directed all telecommunication operators to embark on linking subscribers’ SIM cards to NIN between now and December 30, 2020, adding that phone users, who fail to submit themselves to the process risk disconnection.
The order outraged subscribers claiming the time frame was short while the House of Representatives have called for an extension till January 20, 2021.
The Daily Sun said upon investigation into the exercise, it discovered the federal would make N3bn from it explaining that subscribers would be charged N20 each.
It wrote, “Daily Sun investigations reveal that the Federal Government would rake in about N3,380 billion from the over 169 million mobile connections as N20 will be charged for each Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) message to get a NIN from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) data base.”
