A burial ceremony in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, turned bloody on Tuesday when a traditional ruler, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, was shot dead during the funeral rites of a fellow traditional ruler.

Akinola was among traditional rulers and other members of the community gathered for the traditional proceedings when a firearm suddenly went off.

The bullet reportedly struck him in the head, killing him instantly and throwing mourners into panic.

Witnesses said confusion broke out at the ceremony immediately after the gunshot, with those present struggling to understand how the firearm was discharged.

Some residents reportedly believed the shooting was an accidental discharge, with accounts suggesting that firearms may have been part of the traditional activities. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident had not been officially established as of press time.

A video of the shocking incident also circulated on social media shortly after the tragedy.

The Ondo State Police Command has since arrested one suspect in connection with the death.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident and said investigators had commenced a thorough probe.

According to the police spokesman, the investigation is aimed at establishing exactly how the firearm was discharged and the circumstances that led to the death of the high chief.

The identity of the suspect and further details about the weapon involved had not been disclosed by the police as the investigation continued.

The tragedy has left Ayeka community in shock, with authorities expected to determine whether the fatal shooting was accidental or resulted from another circumstance.
