The alleged killer of a young woman, Becky Jerry, who was found dead in the Romi area of Kaduna State after attending a candlelight service, has reportedly been arrested by the police.
The suspect, identified as Manasseh Jatua, was allegedly tracked down through the mobile phone belonging to the deceased, which he reportedly left in her pocket after the incident.
Becky’s death had sent shock waves through the Romi community after her lifeless body was discovered on Maiagwa Street in the early hours of Saturday, September 5.
According to reports, Becky had attended a candlelight procession the previous night in honour of a popular nail technician before she was allegedly killed.
Her sudden death triggered an investigation as police officers reportedly visited the scene and began efforts to unravel what happened to her.
A fresh account of the investigation now claims detectives made a breakthrough after tracing Becky’s phone.
Sources alleged that the trail led investigators to Jatua, who was subsequently taken in for questioning.
During interrogation, the suspect was reportedly said to have confessed to killing Becky, allegedly telling investigators that he became angry after she received a phone call while they were together.
His reported account suggested that the phone conversation triggered the confrontation that allegedly ended with Becky’s death.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged killing, however, remain under investigation.
The suspect is reportedly expected to be transferred to the Kaduna State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation as detectives work to establish what exactly happened before Becky was found dead.
There has been no publicly available detailed statement from the Kaduna State Police Command confirming the alleged confession at the time of filing this report.
The reported breakthrough comes days after Becky’s death raised concerns among residents and those who knew her, with calls for the police to bring whoever was responsible to justice.
