A fresh controversy has hit the health sector in Nasarawa State after Governor Abdullahi Sule ordered an investigation into allegations that hospital workers sold equipment donated to the General Hospital, Umaisha.
The governor vowed that any staff member found guilty of diverting or selling the items would be dismissed from service and prosecuted.
The directive followed a viral video showing the member representing Umaisha/Ugya Constituency in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, confronting officials of the hospital over the alleged disappearance of the donated materials.
Sa’ad had reportedly provided orthopaedic mattresses, ceiling fans and standing fans to improve conditions for patients at the facility. However, during an inspection visit, the lawmaker accused the hospital management of failing to account for the items, alleging that they had been sold.
The video, which sparked outrage among residents, showed the lawmaker expressing anger over what he described as a betrayal of the gesture meant to support patients and improve healthcare delivery in the community.
Reacting to the development, Governor Sule condemned the alleged act, describing it as “inhuman” and unacceptable.
The governor spoke on Wednesday during the commissioning of heavy-duty machinery and equipment under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project in Lafia.
He said the lawmaker had made personal efforts to provide support for the hospital, only for the donated items to allegedly disappear.
According to him, the Commissioner for Health had been directed to immediately investigate the matter and ensure that appropriate action was taken against anyone found responsible.
“I have already asked the Commissioner for Health to investigate, to dismiss and fire them, and after that, to prosecute them,” Sule said.
The state government is expected to release further details after the investigation is concluded, including the fate of any officials found culpable.
