Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, said that he would negotiate with bandits if the situation is right.
Zamfara has been a hotbed of insecurity bordering on banditry that predates Lawal’s time.
The governor in past expressed his indisposition to negotiating with bandits as a means of bringing the menace to an end.
In a seeming volte-face, the governor in an interview with BBC Hausa service, said dialogue with bandits was not entirely off the government’s table.
He added that if bandits are ready to surrender he won’t mind to negotiate with them, saying, “They should either lay down their weapons or we continue with our decisive action against them.”
