The police invitation to Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II over the gruesome murder of a palace guard for the purpose of questioning has been withdrawn.
The guard was stabbed to death on March 30, 2025, at Kofar Mata Eid Ground during the last Eid celebration; in a brutal attack that marred the festive period, and left several others injured.
“I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, to invite you for an investigative meeting regarding an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain.
“You are hereby invited to the Force Intelligence Department, opposite Police Force Headquarters, Area 11, Abuja,” read an invitation letter to the Emir by Commissioner of Police(Operations), Olajide Ibitoye, on behalf of Deputy Inspector–General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, FID.
The invitation to Sanusi to appear before the police on Tuesday was not music to the ears of many members of the public while some Civil society organisations villified it and the federal government.
In a turn of event, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the withdrawal of the earlier invitation to the 16th Emir of Kano.
The development was made public by the spokesman of the police, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Adejobi said Egbetokun has now directed that the operatives of the Force Intelligence Department should now obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s statement discreetly.
The spokesman stated that the decision not to invite the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor again followed notable individuals’ intervention.
He added the police is committed to securing every part of the country and individuals without fear or favour.
