The Iranian government has summoned the Nigerian Charge d’Affaires in Tehran to protest the killing of Shiite Muslims in Kaduna.

Iran is the world’s largest Shiite Muslim state.

On Sunday soldiers raided the home of Ibraheem Zakzaky, leader of the Shiite Islamic Movement in Zaria after members of the sect stoned the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai on Saturday.

In the reprisal attack, about twenty members of the sect, including one of the wives of the leader, Hajia Zeenat, his son, Sayyid Aliyu, and his second in command, Sheikh Muhammad Turi, reportedly lost their lives.

According to AP, Iran’s state TV reported that the country’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Nigerian Charge d’Affaires following the incident.

The news agency reported that during the broadcast a senior Foreign Ministry official condemned the killings and said the Nigerian government is responsible to protect Shiite Muslim lives and properties. Iran is the world’s largest Shiite Muslim state.
