The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has sacked one of its staff members for allegedly extorting unsuspecting candidates, declaring that its war against fraud will start from within.
The examination body disclosed the development in its release bulletin on Monday, warning employees that abusing their positions or exploiting candidates would attract severe sanctions.
JAMB said the unnamed staff member was shown the way out after being found involved in the extortion of candidates, stressing that its crackdown on fraudulent practices was not limited to outsiders.
The action comes as JAMB intensifies efforts to protect candidates from individuals who use the admission and examination system to make illegal financial demands.
Only recently, the police also announced the arrest of a suspect allegedly linked to a syndicate impersonating JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, through fake social media accounts to defraud members of the public. Investigators said the case followed a petition by the Registrar and led them to Anambra State, where one suspect was arrested.
Against this backdrop, JAMB said it was determined to ensure that its own officials did not become part of the problem.
The Board said the termination of the staff member was a demonstration of its renewed commitment to “flushing out bad eggs” from the system.
It warned its workforce against any conduct capable of undermining the integrity of JAMB or exploiting candidates and members of the public.
According to the Board, its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct applies to every employee, irrespective of rank or position.
JAMB stressed that it would not protect staff members who abused the trust placed in them by candidates or used their official positions for personal gain.
The Board further warned that employees found engaging in acts capable of compromising its operations would face severe disciplinary action in accordance with established rules.
It said the latest sanction should serve as a warning that the fight against fraud must not only target outsiders seeking to exploit candidates but must also deal decisively with misconduct within the organisation.
JAMB reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a clean, accountable and professional workforce, insisting that protecting the credibility of the admission and examination process must begin from within.
