The Kano State government has banned persons of the opposite sex from riding the same commercial tricycle with effect from January.
The ban was announced by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje at the 77th annual Islamic vacation course (IVC) organised by the Zone A of Muslim Society of Nigeria (MSSN) which took place at Bayero University, Kano.
Representing Gov. Ganduje, Commander-General of Hisbah Board, Harun Ibn-Sina said the clampdown was informed by the commitment of the state government to Islamic values.
Recall that Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of the state, introduced the commercial tricycles as means of transportation only for women, until it was reversed and used by both genders.
In September, Baffa Agundi, Managing Director of Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), announced plans to ban the commercial tricycle by the end of the year.
