An official of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Idris Ahmed Gama, has been arrested for speaking in favour of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer, LGBTQ.

Gama’s arrest formed part of the issue when Commander General of the Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa presided over a press briefing in Kano on Monday.

At the occasion, Daurawa told of the agency’s commitment to the ban on LGBTQ promotion, adding that the agency will deal ruthlessly with groups in the business under the guise of empowerment.

Speaking, the apprehended staff, Gama, said his presence and statement at a workshop on human rights organised by a group, Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality (WISE), found to promote LGBTQ rights was out of ignorance.

According to him, he was invited to the workshop on human rights via WhatsApp.

“I was personally invited and after the programme I was interviewed on how the police arrested LGBTQ members, and I said it was a violation of human rights,” he narrated.
