Two medical doctors in the employ of government hospitals: Michael Atiba and Ugbeye Michael, have been brought to court for unintentionally killing a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi.
Atiba of the Gbagada Hospital, and Michael, a consultant with the National Orthopaedic Hospital, were on Monday arraigned before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.
Both are facing involuntary manslaughter slammed against them by the Lagos government following the death of Ugorobi under their care.
The court heard from the state prosecution counsel, A. O. Azeez, that they committed the offenc on October 21, 2023 at No. 20, Michael Adekoya Street, Ilupeju area of the State at about 12pm.
Azeez said the patient’s death proceeded from the failure of the two doctors to give the deceased anaesthetics before surgery and after surgery.
This, he said, amounted to involuntary manslaughter and contravention of Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The doctors in turn denied the charge while the judge adjourned the case till May 15, 2024, for trial.
