Apart from a police officer, Samuel Ukpabio, two women are currently in the custody of the police in Lagos over the whereabouts and circumstances surrounding the missing of a newborn, one Fortune Obafuoso’s child.
Fortune, a mother of three had cried out after the day-old baby was forcefully taken from her.
It came after the teacher, a single-mother in distressed circumstances went into surrogacy but her first deal didn’t go as planned, and according to her, there was somehow an arrangement with her client to get someone to impregnate her (Fortune) and later she (client) would take possession of the baby.
Ukpabio, a policeman attached to the SCID, claiming to be acting for a government ministry under duress took the child from Fortune. He threatened to charge her with trying to sell the child, an allegation she denied, and gave her N15,000 and N170, 000 at different times.
After the whole dirty saga came to light following which Ukpabio was arrested, the police said two women are in their custody in relation to the matter.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known in a phone-interview he granted Punchng, saying, “Two ladies have been arrested; the inspector (Ukpabio) mentioned the person he gave the baby to and we arrested that person. The person is in detention now. During interrogation, that person mentioned that she gave the baby to another person and the person has been arrested and detained.
“Both of them have not denied collecting the baby but we still don’t know where the baby is. We are still working and by the end of tomorrow (Wednesday), we should be able to tell where they took the baby to. So, we have a total of three people in detention now; the inspector, and the two ladies.”
