Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, has dragged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke’s wife into the heated governorship contest, mocking the governor over his repeated references to the former governor.
Oyetola, who spoke while addressing All Progressives Congress stakeholders and supporters in Osun on Saturday, said Adeleke had become so preoccupied with him that even domestic issues involving his wife could be blamed on him.
He said Adeleke could wake up from a nightmare and claim that he had seen Oyetola, while a delay in his wife serving him food could also be blamed on the former governor.
Oyetola was reacting to Adeleke’s allegations that APC members and leaders of the Accord Party were being intimidated ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The former governor, who lost his re-election bid to Adeleke in the 2022 governorship election, said the governor’s complaints showed that he was already aware that he was losing his grip on the state.
He also dismissed Adeleke’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu, insisting that it would not save the governor from defeat.
Oyetola said Adeleke could make as many endorsements as he wanted, but the APC would still reclaim the governorship seat.
He further said he had deliberately avoided engaging Adeleke in public exchanges, warning that the governor would feel the impact if he decided to take him on.
Adeleke is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party and will face the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and other candidates in the August 15 poll.
The election has largely been framed as a close contest between Adeleke and Oyebamiji, with both camps intensifying their campaigns ahead of the poll.
The political atmosphere in Osun has also become tense, with the rival camps trading allegations of violence, intimidation and arrests of their supporters.
Adeleke and his campaign team have accused the Oyetola-led APC of intimidating Accord Party members following reported arrests and raids on the homes of some party leaders and senior government officials.
The APC has rejected the allegations and continued its campaign to reclaim the state after losing it to Adeleke in 2022.
Oyetola governed Osun from 2018 to 2022 before losing his re-election bid to Adeleke in a closely contested election. He is now backing Oyebamiji in the APC’s bid to return to power in the state.
