A wedding celebration in Kano State turned into a scene of horror after a 34-year-old man allegedly opened fire on guests over the noise from the event, killing one person and injuring three others.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Tudun Yola Quarters in the Kano metropolis, where music was reportedly blaring as the marriage ceremony got underway.
The suspect, identified as Rabi’u Mukthar, allegedly emerged from his residence with a pump-action rifle and began firing sporadically at the gathering.
The shooting sent guests and residents running for cover as panic reportedly gripped the neighbourhood.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Kano State Police Command spokesman, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, said two suspects had been arrested and the firearm recovered.
“The man, Rabiu Mukthar of Tudun Yola Quarters, used a pump-action gun to sporadically shoot at the gathering of the marriage celebration,” Haruna said.
According to the police, officers responded immediately after receiving information about the attack and arrested Mukthar and another suspect.
“Immediately the police got information of the unfortunate incident; they swung into action, arrested the man alongside one other person, and the gun was recovered from him,” Haruna said.
One person was killed in the attack, while three others sustained injuries.
The police said the suspect, during interrogation, claimed that the organisers of the musical event had failed to consult residents before the celebration.
He reportedly told investigators that the loud music disturbed his sleep and that he became angry after being unable to rest.
The explanation has added a disturbing twist to the incident, as what began as an apparent neighbourhood noise dispute allegedly ended with gunfire and the death of a wedding guest.
Police, however, have not said whether the suspect had any prior dispute with the organisers or the victims.
The command said the second suspect was also being held while detectives continued to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“The suspect and one other person are currently in police custody while investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances behind the incident,” Haruna added.
The recovered pump-action rifle has also been retained as part of the investigation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the potentially deadly consequences of neighbourhood disputes, particularly when complaints over noise and social gatherings escalate into violence.
For the wedding guests, what should have been a day of celebration instead ended in tragedy, with one family mourning a loved one and three others nursing injuries.
