A Lagos High Court in Igbosere has declared all marriages contracted at all local government councils in Nigeria illegal.
The court presided over by Justice Ibironke Harrison, also asked all the affected couples to return the illegal certificate to the issuing local government council for a constitutionally-recognised replacement.

The court’s judgement followed the suit against Ikeja Local Government and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) brought by Consumer Rights lawyer, Olumide Babalola.
In the suit No. LD/1343GCM/Babalola asked the court to declare the said customized marriage certificate issued by local government registries as illegal and unconstitutional and restrain them from issuing same henceforth.
Babalola’s request was granted following the judgement delivered on 15th May, 2017.
