Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said President Muhammadu Buhari is made to believe state governors are thieves, so his (Buhari’s) inclination to see to it that the naira swap initiative is not derailed.
The policy, which gave rise to cash crunch, and widespread hardship, has driven a wedge between some governors elected on the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC, on one side, and Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, on the other side.
The concerned governors, among them, el-Rufai, dragged the federal government and CBN to Supreme Court, with some making uncharitable remarks about the President.
Consequently, they have been facing slur of acting out of self-interest, with report rife that the naira swap has rendered useless ill-gotten money in old N500 and N1000 notes, they allegedly stashed away in hopes of deploying it for vote-buying during the coming polls.
Dismissing the claim, while speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa on Monday, the Kaduna governor said some persons who have the President’s ears made him to believe that governors against the policy are thieves.
His word, “Because a president is a person who believes in people, and we (governors), our image has been tarnished. He has been told that governors are thieves which is why we are against the naira redesign policy. Even if we go to him and say ‘our leader you have been lied to in this place’, and he says I understand and will take action on it, the moment we depart, he will be told not to take any action. Every person is a nine out of ten. In this regard, we believe the president made a mistake.”
