The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Borno State has sanctioned its House of Assembly candidate, Mohammed Bunu, over campaign materials allegedly linking him to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

The disciplinary action followed the circulation of campaign materials bearing the ADC logo, the slogan “Sabon Tafiya, Sabon Salo,” and the photographs and names of Atiku and Bunu.

In a letter dated October 25, 2026, and signed by the NDC state Deputy Chairman, Umar Fema, the party said the materials raised concerns about Bunu’s political allegiance, loyalty and commitment to its principles.

The party explained that the case originated at the Hausari Ward level before being referred to the party leadership in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council for investigation and further consideration.

According to the letter, the Hausari Ward Executive invited Bunu to appear before it at about 10am on October 23 to respond to allegations of involvement in campaign activities associated with another political party.

However, the party claimed that Bunu failed to attend the meeting to defend himself.

Following his reported absence, the ward secretary, Rabiu Umar, recommended disciplinary action and referred the matter to the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council Working Committee.

Bunu was reportedly invited again on October 24 to appear before an investigation committee but did not attend the proceedings, the letter stated.

The party said the MMC chairman, Adamu Ibrahim, subsequently endorsed the recommendation for disciplinary action and forwarded the matter to the state leadership.

After reviewing the reports submitted through its internal disciplinary structure, the NDC state chapter decided to dismiss Bunu from the party, subject to applicable constitutional requirements and the authority of the relevant party organs.

Fema said the decision was based on allegations of conduct considered inconsistent with the party’s constitution, rules and regulations.

The party also directed Bunu to comply with its established procedures and refrain from representing himself as authorised to act on its behalf in any capacity affected by a valid and effective party decision.

However, the letter distinguished the disciplinary action from the separate question of terminating or expelling Bunu’s party membership. It also noted that any action affecting his status as an NDC candidate must be considered separately in accordance with the party’s constitution and the authority of the relevant organs.
