Niger’s military junta has threatened to kill deposed President Mohamed Bazoum if neighboring countries attempted any military intervention to restore his rule.
This is according to The Associated Press citing two Western officials.
The publication said it gleaned from the sources that when U.S. Under Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland met with representatives of the junta in Niger this week, she was told any result to military action by ECOWAS would lead to Bazoum’s killing.
However, ECOWAS bloc after a meeting of its Heads of members on Thursday in Abuja directed the deployment of a “standby force” to restore democracy in Niger.
