A United States court has sentenced a 27-year-old Nigerian, Afeez Olatunji Adewale, to five years in prison for his role in a sextortion scheme that led to the death of an American teenager.
The US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania handed down the sentence on Friday after Adewale pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud.
In a statement, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, David Metcalf, said Adewale was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.
Metcalf said Adewale was arrested in Nigeria on August 17, 2023, during a joint FBI operation targeting sexual extortion suspects, extradited to the US in February 2026 with the support of Nigerian authorities, and pleaded guilty in April.
FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs said the sentence showed offenders could not escape justice by operating outside the US, praising the collaboration between domestic and international law enforcement agencies.
Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy also commended investigators and prosecutors, saying the case highlighted the devastating impact of sextortion on victims’ families.
US authorities said Adewale was the last of three Nigerians convicted in the case.
His co-defendant, Samuel Abiodun, was sentenced to five years in prison in June 2025 after pleading guilty to money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud.
Another accomplice, Imoleayo Aina, also known as “Alice Dave,” was sentenced to six years in prison in October 2025 after pleading guilty to cyberstalking, interstate threat to injure reputation, receiving proceeds of extortion, money laundering conspiracy, and wire fraud.
Metcalf said the arrests, extraditions and convictions demonstrate the Justice Department’s commitment to pursuing sextortion offenders wherever they operate, while extending sympathy to the victim’s family.
