The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) said it has commenced investigation into the serious incident involving United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.

The aircraft, an Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft with the registration number: 5N-BWY from the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport had skidded off the runway with 51 passengers and four crew members onboard on landing at the airport.

The airline had attributed the serious incident involving the flight U5 0513 to a downpour. The serious incident occured at 6;33pm.

The airline said that the aircraft landed normally, but skidded off the runway upon landing, adding that all the passengers and their luggage were safely evacuated by its team.

A statement on Saturday morning by Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, the General Manager, NSIB, said that the investigating agency had been notified of the serious incident, while investigation had also commenced immediately.

NSIB said: “The aircraft on landing on Runway 18R of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, skidded off the runway.

There was no injury or fatality.

“The NSIB, hereby, solicits information from the general public in form of pictures, video or recording evidences to assist in conducting a comprehensive investigation.”

NSIB said it could be reached either through its website or social media platforms for useful information on the serious incident.

The statement added: “The NSIB will appreciate that the general public and press respect the privacy of the people involved and NOT assume the cause of the serious incident until formal report is released.”
