The Nigeria Democratic Congress has hit back at Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi, over his legal battle to obtain the academic and NYSC records of the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The NDC dismissed the three suits filed by Arabambi against the West African Examinations Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the National Youth Service Corps, describing Obi’s academic pedigree as verifiable and challenging the LP chieftain to produce evidence of wrongdoing.
Arabambi filed the suits at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking orders compelling the institutions to release official records relating to certificates allegedly issued to Obi.
Reacting to the development, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, questioned Arabambi’s motive, noting that the LP chieftain had reportedly admitted that he was not challenging the authenticity of Obi’s certificate.
Director said the institutions appeared to have considered the requests frivolous, adding that Arabambi was free to pursue the matter in court.
He said Obi had nothing to hide and had previously challenged the public to scrutinise his credentials.
According to him, the former Anambra State governor’s academic records could withstand scrutiny, while he challenged those questioning them to produce contrary evidence.
The NDC spokesman also turned the spotlight on President Bola Tinubu, asking whether the President would be willing to subject his own credentials to similar scrutiny.
The three suits were filed separately.
The case against WAEC is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2064/2026, while the NYSC suit is FHC/ABJ/CS/2063/2026. Both were filed on September 1, 2026.
The suit against UNN, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9.
In the WAEC case, Arabambi is asking for a Certified True Copy of WAEC Certificate No. SC042560, said to have been issued to Obi Gregory Onwubuasi in June 1978.
His suit against UNN seeks access to the university’s certificate register, academic and graduation records, Senate or degree-award records and other official documents relating to Certificate No. D000198.
For the NYSC, Arabambi is seeking records concerning Certificate No. 203495, reportedly issued to “Obi, Gregory Peter-Onwubuasi (Mr)” on May 1, 1986.
He is also asking the corps to clarify how the name “Peter-Onwubuasi” appears in its records.
Court documents showed that WAEC rejected Arabambi’s request in a letter dated August 11, 2026, citing provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.
Arabambi alleged that UNN and NYSC failed to either grant his requests or explain their refusal.
He is therefore asking the court to declare the institutions’ refusal or failure to provide the information unlawful and order them to release the requested records.
His lawyer, Anderson Asemota, filed the suits.
But Director said the NDC was unconcerned by the litigation, insisting that Obi’s credentials were open to verification.
He also criticised the attention being given to the controversy, urging the media and politicians to focus on Nigeria’s economic difficulties and worsening insecurity.
No hearing date had been fixed in the three cases as of the time of filing this report.
