A political campaign in Ilesa, Osun State, has turned chaotic after a 12-year-old boy was allegedly hit by a bullet during a rally by the All Progressives Congress (APC), sparking protests and fresh tension in the area.
The incident reportedly happened on Saturday morning when gunshots rang out during the APC campaign. The boy was said to have been inside his mother’s shop when he was caught in the crossfire.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, but unverified reports alleged that the Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly, Wale Akerele, was at the scene alongside operatives of the state security outfit, Amotekun Corps, when the incident occurred.
The claims further alleged that the Amotekun operatives and the lawmaker were involved in a confrontation that led to gunshots being fired, leaving some APC members injured.
The boy’s condition and the number of casualties could not be independently confirmed as of press time, although a photograph circulating online showed the minor lying on what appeared to be a hospital bed.
The shooting has reportedly triggered protests in parts of Ilesa, with angry residents demanding a full investigation into how the child was allegedly shot.
The incident comes amid heightened political activities in Osun State ahead of the 2026 governorship election, where political parties have intensified campaigns and mobilisation efforts.
The election, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, is expected to be a major political contest as parties battle to control the state after years of intense political rivalry.
