A taxi driver was on Monday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital arrested following the sudden death of a passenger that boarded his vehicle.
The incident, which happened around 8.00am at Kemta-Idi Aba area in the metropolis drew a large crowd to the police station at Kemta where the driver took the remains of the passenger to and reported the case.
The passenger who was later identified as Michael Hogan, boarded the taxi from Odeda in Odeda Local Government and was heading to Idi Aba when his whole body began to convulse.
An account by an eyewitness revealed that the driver consequently pulled off but was overwhelmed by shock when Hogan passed on, on the spot.
“He burst into tears, which attracted his fellow-taxi drivers and passers-by who advised him to head straight to Kemta police station with the corpse where he was detained,” eyewitness narrated.
It was later gathered from family members of the deceased who were in the station to claim his remains that that Hogan had been battling an undisclosed ailment for sometime and was on his way to buy herbal medicine.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi said the passenger died at Iyana Mortuary area in the taxi and his family told police that he had been sick for a long while.
He said, “The family said Hogan left home early in the morning for Abeokuta to collect herbal remedies not knowing that would be his end.
“The police will soon release the corpse to the family for burial as requested after due process must have been followed.”
