A police officer attached to the Edo State Police command has allegedly killed an 18-year-old youth, Chinedu Abimbor, for failing to stop at a checkpoint.

The incident happened at Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State on Wednesday.

According to reports, Abimbor was driving a Mercedes Benz when he ran into a team of police officers at a checkpoint in the town.

He was said to have been flagged down by the police at the checkpoint but defied their order and continued his driving.

The report stated that the teenage motorist’s refusal to obey the officers’ command infuriated one of them and in consequence of the defiance the trigger-happy officer fired a gunshot at the vehicle.

The bullet, the report added, went on to hit the young motorist resulting in his murder.

“As a result of the sad incident protest broke out in the town on Thursday. People took to the streets to demand for justice and the prosecution of the officer responsible for Abimbor’s killing,” sources said.

In a statement on the matter the command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, said the Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin had ordered a full-scale investigation with a view to ensure that justice is done.

“The Commissioner of Police has commiserated with family, friends of the deceased, and sued for calm with assurance that justice will prevailed at the end,” the statement read in part.
