A police officer accused of fatally shooting a young man, Anthony Eruchi Obodo, at Agip Roundabout in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been detained and placed under interrogation by a police investigative panel.
The officer, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fabian Kpeanebari, was taken into custody following the August 27, 2026 incident that sparked outrage among residents and renewed calls for accountability in cases involving alleged police misconduct.
Obodo was reportedly inside his vehicle when the incident occurred, with witnesses alleging that he was shot during a confrontation involving police officers at the busy Port Harcourt location.
Following public anger over the killing, the Rivers State Police Command moved to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, leading to the detention of the officer and other personnel attached to the team involved in the incident.
Sources close to the investigation said Kpeanebari is currently appearing before a panel where he is being questioned over the events that led to the death of the young motorist.
The panel is expected to establish what transpired between the officers and Obodo before the gun was fired, as well as determine whether the use of force was justified or a breach of police regulations.
The police have yet to announce the outcome of the interrogation, but the command has assured that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.
The death of Obodo, said to be a young graduate, has triggered anger among residents who are demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.
The incident comes amid renewed concerns over alleged excessive use of force by security personnel, with rights groups and citizens repeatedly calling for stricter accountability measures within the police force.
