Properties destroyed as fire guts 4 flat in Lagos estate

Properties worth about N5million were destroyed at Gowon Estate in Egbeda in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State on Friday evening by fire.

It was said that the fire lasted an hour after it was discovered at House No. 33 B where it started before spreading to House nos: 35,37, and 39.

According to eyewitness, the attention of occupants of House 33B were drawn to the fire that engulfed one of their rooms after their generator stopped working at 8.15pm.

“It happened that the family had their generator on but were surprised when it switched off. The family live upstairs. One of the children, a girl, was heading to the ground floor where the generator was placed to check what was wrong and restart it but on her way, her sibling told her to check their father’s room and ensure the refrigerator was switched off.

“But, when she threw open the room’s door she was greeted by fire. She raised alarm and alerted residents to the fire,” sources said.

It was gathered residents rallied together to put out the fire and save properties from the inferno as they made a phone call to Lagos State Fire Service whose officials later arrived to extinguish the fire but that was after it had spread to three other flats and destroyed properties worth 5 million naira

“And if not for the intervention of the fire service men , the fire would have caused more havoc,’ source said, adding that the incident occurred due to the failure of House 33 occupants to switch off the socket boxes in the room.

“So when the generator was put on the box sparked and attract some other house appliance in the room and all were exposed to other robber materials. which lead to fire.”
