A prophetess, Folake Olasode, 35, and a schoolteacher, Damilola Aboloyinijo, 31, have been brought before a Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Tinubu on grounds of obtaining N8m from one Sarah Umeh under false pretence.

Prophetess Olasode and Aboloyinijo were arraigned on Monday.

Their arraignment followed five counts of conspiracy, stealing, obtaining, unlawful assault, and breach of public peace, levelled against them by the police.

The Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Francis Igbinosa, told the court that in May 2024 the duo and others at large made Umeh to believe she was going to die alongside her children in no time, and used the lie to swindle her of N8m.

In the incident, which took place at 7A, Jide Agbalaya Street, Chevy-View, Lekki area of Lagos, the defendants prepared charms, and put incisions on their victim and her three children for a supposed protection against death, an action they knew to be false, Igbinosa told the court.

The court also heard from the Prosecutor that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the public peace by burning charms contained in a calabash in the compound of Umeh.

The offences, Igbinosa sais contravened Sections 411, 314, 287, 172, 287, and 168 (d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

In their reaction to the charges, the defendants pleaded not guilty, with their counsel, Moses Enema, applying for their bail on the basis that they were first-time offenders.

In turn, Magistrate Aderemi Gbajumo granted the application in the sum of N750,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
