The report that the Senate is in the process of passing bills that would move Nigeria towards having 42 more states has drawn reaction from the Red Chamber.
The social media is awash with the report, which sparked from requests by the agitators submitted to House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.
The proposed states include: Savannah State from Borno, Kwararafa State from Taraba, Katagum State from Bauchi, Amana State from Adamawa, South Sardauna State from Taraba, Muri State from Taraba, Ijebu State from Ogun, Igbomina State from Osun, Kwara, and Ekiti, Oke-Ogun State from Oyo and Ibadan State from Oyo State.
On Tuesday during a plenary Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), raised concerns about the rumour making the rounds bordering on the Senate allegedly working towards the reality of the proposals.
This was however met with disclaimer from the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” Akpabio clarified.
He went on to urge communities against organising meetings and mobilising themselves over proposed states that have not been legally established.
