A 400-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, has been killed by a stray bullet during a land dispute in his hometown.

The deceased, identified as Isma’il Ishaq Magaji, was a student of the Department of Public Administration at the university.

Magaji reportedly died after he was caught in the gunfire that erupted during the dispute in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The university confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued by its Deputy Registrar, Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, on Saturday.

According to the institution, the incident has thrown the university community into mourning as Magaji was still pursuing his degree before his life was suddenly cut short.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Sulaiman, described the student’s death as a painful and distressing loss, while sympathising with his family, friends, classmates and associates.

Sulaiman also called for calm among the communities involved in the land dispute, urging them to shun violence and resolve their differences through dialogue.

He further appealed to those involved to exercise restraint and embrace peaceful coexistence to prevent another tragedy.

The Vice-Chancellor prayed for the repose of Magaji’s soul and asked Allah to give his family and loved ones the strength to cope with the loss.
