Three persons were arrested at the weekend for allegedly attempting to dupe Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose by posing as President Muhammadu Buhari’s private security aides.
In the guise of President Buhari’s aides and posing as Benedict Ola Idega and Abdulsalami H. Leader, two of the suspects were arrested at Gov. Fayose’s country home in Afao-Ekiti where they met the governor claiming that they had in their possession the preliminary report of the military panel set up to investigate alleged partisanship of members of the Nigeria Army during the 2015 general election, particularly in Ekiti, Osun, Rivers, and Akwa-Ibom States.
Fayose has been caught up in a controversy after his voice was recorded in an audio tape with former minister of state for defense, Musiliu Obanikoro and army officers led by a Brigadier General in a meeting allegedly plotting to rig last year’s governorship election in the state.
The fake President Buhari’s aides after presenting a photocopy of the false preliminary report to Gov. Fayose told him that if he met their financial request they could help him manipulate the final report.
Gov. Fayose has had reservation about the proposal from the first time he was contacted on phone by the suspects and had informed security operatives who put the phone number they used to call him on surveillance.
Midway into the meeting, the governor was said to have expressed satisfaction with the suspects’ presentation and excused himself to fetch them some money when armed policemen stormed in and arrested them.
A member of the gang was also arrested at a popular hotel where they lodged.
