President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has heaped praise on former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, declaring that few Nigerian leaders have left a mark on the country as deep as the retired general.
Tinubu made the declaration while celebrating Babangida’s 85th birthday, describing the former military ruler as a towering figure whose influence continues to be felt across Nigeria.
In a birthday message signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Babangida’s eight years in power produced changes that permanently altered Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical landscape.
Tinubu said Babangida’s impact could hardly be ignored, regardless of differing opinions about his administration.
According to him, the former military leader oversaw economic expansion, infrastructure development and the creation of institutions and government agencies that remain relevant to the country today.
The President also credited Babangida with decisions that, in his view, helped shape the current structure of the Nigerian federation, suggesting that several states might not have come into existence without his intervention.
Tinubu said Babangida’s contribution to national development had secured him a permanent place in Nigeria’s history.
Even after leaving power, the President noted, the former military ruler has continued to contribute to national affairs through his advice and counsel from his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
Tinubu described such guidance as particularly valuable to younger Nigerians and wished Babangida continued good health, strength and many more years.
He prayed that Almighty Allah would preserve the former military leader and grant him the grace to celebrate many more birthdays.
