The Anglican Church in Anambra State has been thrown into mourning after the death of Rev’d Paul Chibuzo Amakom, a newly ordained priest who reportedly died in a road accident barely two months after entering the priesthood.

Amakom reportedly died on Friday, September 4, 2026, in a fatal car crash, leaving his family, fellow clergy, friends and members of the Anglican community devastated.

The tragedy is particularly painful because the cleric had only recently begun his journey as a priest.

Amakom was among those ordained under the Diocese on the Niger and was listed for the diaconate ordination held at the Basilica of St John, Fegge, Onitsha, on July 19, 2026, under the leadership of the Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, the Rt Rev Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo.

That means his death came just weeks after his ordination, cutting short a ministry that had barely begun.

Before his ordination and subsequent posting, Amakom was associated with St Peter’s Anglican Church, Nkpor, where he was known within the church community.

News of his death has triggered an outpouring of grief among members of the Anglican community, with mourners describing the young priest’s sudden departure as heartbreaking.

His death has also been described as a painful reminder of how unpredictable life can be, coming at a time when he was expected to spend years serving the church and his congregation.

Amakom was also identified in tributes as an indigene of Awkuzu, with one tribute describing him as an illustrious son of the Ukpomachi Awkuzu IbilibeOgada community.

The circumstances surrounding the crash, including the exact location and what led to the accident, had not been independently established in the reports available as of Saturday.

However, several reports and social media tributes have consistently placed his death on September 4, with members of the church community mourning the loss of a priest whose pastoral journey had only just started.

The sudden death has left the Anglican community confronting a devastating question: how could a promising priest, barely two months into his new calling, be gone so soon?

As tributes continue to pour in, family, friends, colleagues and worshippers are left to mourn Amakom and pray for strength for those he left behind.
