A former Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University, Etimbuk Daniel, has reportedly died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State, raising concerns over the medical care available to corps members.
Daniel, described as a First-Class graduate and former student leader, reportedly died after developing a headache during the mandatory orientation programme.
The circumstances surrounding his death have sparked concern, particularly over allegations that he experienced delays in receiving adequate medical attention at the camp’s clinic.
Details of the incident, including the precise medical cause of death and the sequence of events leading to the tragedy, have yet to be independently established.
Daniel’s death has left his family, friends, former schoolmates and members of the Akwa Ibom State University community in mourning.
His reported academic distinction and record of student leadership have also heightened the sadness surrounding the loss of a young graduate who had embarked on the next phase of his life through national service.
The incident has renewed questions about the readiness of NYSC orientation camps to handle medical emergencies, including the availability of qualified healthcare personnel, functional medical facilities and prompt referral arrangements for patients requiring urgent hospital treatment.
Concerns have also emerged over whether Daniel received timely medical attention and whether any delay contributed to his death. However, these allegations remain unverified, and the circumstances require a thorough examination before responsibility can be established.
The NYSC authorities are expected to provide clarity on the incident, including the medical assistance rendered to Daniel and the steps taken after his condition reportedly deteriorated.
The tragedy has also drawn attention to the need for effective emergency response systems at orientation camps, where thousands of young graduates gather for the compulsory national service programme.
For Daniel’s family and associates, the reported death has turned what should have been the beginning of a new chapter into a painful loss, as questions remain over what happened at the Enugu camp.
May his soul rest in peace.
