A Lagos man identified as Basit has been beaten to death by a mob, just weeks before he was reportedly due to walk down the aisle.
Basit, who had recently returned to Nigeria from abroad ahead of his wedding, was allegedly lynched after a hit-and-run incident in the Patey area of Lagos Island, Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night, when Basit was reportedly driving through the community.
According to residents, trouble started after his vehicle allegedly knocked down a man who was attempting to cross the road near Freeman Street.
Rather than stop after the incident, Basit was said to have driven away, prompting angry residents to give chase.
A resident familiar with what happened said the incident occurred as Basit approached the other end of Freeman Street. The resident said people expected him to stop after hitting the pedestrian, but he allegedly continued driving until he was chased and caught.
What followed was a brutal mob attack.
Another resident, identified as Afolabi Lawal, said the mob descended on Basit with sticks and bottles, repeatedly hitting him on the head.
Lawal said the attack left Basit unconscious after he sustained serious head injuries.
The mob reportedly scattered after realising that Basit was no longer responding.
Tragically, the man who had reportedly returned from abroad to prepare for his wedding never made it to the altar.
His wedding was said to have been scheduled for about two weeks from the time of his death.
Meanwhile, a police source confirmed that some suspects had been arrested over the killing.
The source said the suspects were already in custody while Basit’s remains had been deposited at a morgue.
Police are expected to investigate both the alleged hit-and-run and the circumstances surrounding the mob killing.
