The United Kingdom has issued a fresh travel warning to its citizens in Nigeria, advising them against travelling to parts of 11 states and urging caution in another 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The warning was contained in the latest Nigeria travel advisory published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The UK placed Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara under its strictest warning, advising British nationals against all travel to the six states.

In the South-South, the warning covers riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

The FCDO explained that the affected riverine locations are areas accessible by boat but not by road.

The development comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of the country, with the UK regularly updating its travel advice based on perceived risks to British nationals.

19 States, Abuja Under ‘Essential Travel Only’ Warning

The UK also advised its citizens against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Benue, Abia, Anambra and Imo states.

The warning also covers non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.

The FCDO warned that travelling to areas covered by its advisory could have serious implications for travellers, including their insurance coverage.

It stressed that no journey could be guaranteed to be completely safe and urged British nationals planning trips to Nigeria to study the travel advisory before departure.

The UK government further advised travellers to research their destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance.

It warned that travel insurance could become invalid if a traveller deliberately visited an area against FCDO advice.

The latest advisory also contains warnings and information on IVF and fertility treatment scams, overseas adoption, entry requirements, health, safety and security, as well as how British nationals can obtain help while in Nigeria.
