A video of an official of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, instructing customers to visit their banks for the naira swap has hit the net.
Recall there were conflicting reports about the position of the CBN, with regard to collection of the old N1000 and N500 notes.
Upon the February 10 deadline expiration, the apex bank had said only its headquarters and branches across the nation are qualified to collect the two notes, resulting in large crowd of bank customers converging at most of its offices, with one person shot dead in the ensuing melee at that of Edo State.
Amid the crises, a statement credited to the CBN directing customers with less than N500,000 of the controversial notes to go to their banks emerged.
In turn, some commercial banks made announcements to that effect, but not long after, the apex bank refered to the report credited to it as fake.
However, this video of the bank official whose identity is unknown as at the time of this publication, addressing beleaguered customers put the lie to the bankers’ bank’s claim.
It shows that the CBN in truth gave the directive it came back to deny.
Meanwhile, despite CBN’s claim to the contrary, most commercial banks have resumed collection of the notes in line with the order denied by the apex bank.
