A video of a supposed agent of Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State distributing old notes to woo electorate ahead of coming polls is spreading through the net.
In the viral clip, the agent, who is not seen, is heard appealing to objecting beneficiaries, all women, to take the old one thousand naira notes.
The receivers were initially reluctant, citing banks’ disinclination to the controversial old notes while the agent assured them that the governor would see to it that banks change their stance.
The money around N10,000 was tucked inside a branded white envelope with the picture of governor Abiodun on it.
The agent, a male, going by the voice, is also heard asking one of the beneficiaries to say words of appreciation to the governor to which the person obliged.
She expressed her appreciation to Gov. Abiodun and pray for his re-election.
Recall that the Ogun governor is one of the ten state governors elected on the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC, that took the federal government and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to Supreme Court over the naira swap, seeking among others, that the old N500 and N1000 remain legal tenders beyond the February 10 deadline of the apex bank.
In reaction, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), said the governors were only out to ensure alleged ill-gotten old naira notes they allegedly stockpiled for election rigging remained useful saying, “Now the policy has made that looted money completely useless, I think that is why they are angry. So we are so happy with the Federal Government on that, the money they have collected is completely zero, it has expired.”
Former National Legal Adviser of the APC, Dr Muiz Banire, who equally weighed in on the matter, also spoke in the same vein.
The former Lagos commissioner advised voters against selling their votes, adding that at worst they should insist on new naira notes.
“My counsel is that potential voters who must take money should either insist on the real legal tender as pronounced by the apex bank or any other currency acceptable to them,” he remarked.
