Lagos State Government, said Chrisland School, some members of Staff and one of its vendors during its ill-fated Inter-house Sports would face manslaughter charge over the death of 12-year-old Whitney Adeniran.

Recall that deceased Whitney, a pupil of Chrisland died at the school Inter-house Sports in Agege Stadium, with circumstances of her death producing controversy.

The latter arose from the school management’s claim that she slumped to death unprovoked, alluding her demise to alleged illness to which the parents disclaimed both, maintaining that their daughter died of electrocution from uncovered electric wire of a vendor’s candyfloss machine.

Succeeding the argument was an autopsy which proved the Adenirans right, and settled the matter in favour of the bereaved.

The present report is that Lagos State Government is in the process of prosecuting the school, some members of its staff and the vendor in question for their actions and inactions in Whitney’s death, according to the State Ministry of Justice via a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Grace Alo.

It reads in part, “The case was referred to the Nigerian Police Force which carried out a thorough investigation with the help of other agencies.

“The file was subsequently forwarded to the DPP’s Office on Monday 20th March, 2023, for review of the duplicate case file.

“On the 23rd of March, 2023, the DPP issued his Legal Advice and came to the conclusion that a prima facie case of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts had been established against the School, some members of Staff and one of the Vendors.

“They will therefore be charged with the offences of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts contrary to Sections 224 & 251 of the Criminal Law, Ch C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.”
