Dennis Aghanya, the man at the centre of the petition against Justice Walter Onnoghen, in which the Chief Justice of Nigeria is accused of unfull disclosure of his assets and breaching a requirement of the Code of Conduct Bureau, has explained the motivation behind his action.

Aghanya is an activist and the Executive Director, Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative.

His petition has been dogged by controversy with claim that he was sponsored by President Muhammadu Buhari, who he had worked for in the past as an aide.

The peddlers of the claim said Onnoghene was ill-disposed to alleged plan of All Progressive Congress to rig the forthcoming general election and the presidency’s plan is to ease him out and replace him with a person amenable to its cause.

The petitioner however, discountenanced the claim in an interview with Punch, saying, “This is a petition by an NGO. What has Mr. President got to do with it? People are just trying to avoid a major issue. Our concern is to unveil irregularities. People should not try to politicise the good work we are doing.

“The person the petition was written against owed up to everything. In issues of this nature, should we be sentimental or do we face facts?”
