A 23-year-old woman, Mmesoma Umeorini, has allegedly been murdered by her former boyfriend, Chima Ofoeke, in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, following the breakdown of their relationship.
The suspect, who was arrested by the police, allegedly confessed to killing the young woman because she ended their relationship, before putting her remains in a sack and dumping them at an undisclosed location.
The shocking incident came to light after Mmesoma’s mother reported her missing on October 16, 2026, raising the alarm over her unexplained disappearance.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the woman’s mother reported the matter to the Divisional Police Officer in Umuchu after efforts to establish her daughter’s whereabouts proved unsuccessful.
Acting on intelligence, police operatives, working with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, arrested Ofoeke, who was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly admitted killing Mmesoma following the collapse of their relationship.
In a video circulating online, Ofoeke was heard explaining why he allegedly killed the woman and how he disposed of her body.
“I killed her because she broke up with me. I killed her in my house in Uga, put her inside a bag and dumped her somewhere,” he reportedly said.
The suspect subsequently led detectives to the location where the woman’s remains were discovered and recovered.
The circumstances surrounding the killing, including what happened before Mmesoma disappeared, remain under investigation.
The incident has sparked outrage, with residents condemning the alleged murder and warning against possessive behaviour and violence in romantic relationships.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said nobody should lose their life for choosing to end a relationship.
“A breakup is not a crime. Nobody owns another human being. A woman has the right to end a relationship that no longer serves her,” the resident said.
The resident also urged parents, friends and relatives to take threats and controlling behaviour seriously, advising anyone who feels unsafe to seek help and alert the appropriate authorities.
Confirming the arrest, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, had ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.
The command said the move was to ensure a comprehensive and diligent investigation into the circumstances of the woman’s death.Police also urged members of the public to promptly report missing persons and suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
The suspect is expected to face further investigation as detectives work to establish the full circumstances of the killing. The allegations against him have yet to be determined by a court.
