One Victoria Effiong was on Friday brought before a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Iba over allegation of breaching her promise to marry a suitor, Dominic Asuquo.

Effiong, a tailor, is facing three count charges bordering on breach of peace, cheating and obtaining by false pretence.

The court heard from police prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Njoku, that the 25-year-old pretending that her relationship with Dominic was heading to marriage, made him parted with a total sum of N2.8m in cash and valuables including an iPhone worth N240,000, different clothes, a wristwatch, shoes and bags valued at N350,000, and was on a daily upkeep of N4000.

Njoku said the defendant failed to follow through her promise but instead is planning to marry another despite introducing Dominic to her parents.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed are punishable under Sections 168, (1d), 322, and 314 (2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preffered against her saying the plaintiff knew she was dating another man and had told him to stop sending her money but he refused.

At the end, Magistrate Mrs O. M. Ogun granted her bail and slated the matter for November 28, 2024, for mention.
