A woman has been beaten and burnt to death in Niger State for making irreverent comments against Muslim Prophet, Muhammad.

The incident happened on Saturday at Kasuwan Garb in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to report, which gave the victim’s name as Ammaye who was said to be a food seller, it emanated from a joke by a young man.

The latter, this medium gathered had jokingly told Ammaye he wanted to marry her in fulfilment of Sunnah to which the lady’s response was viewed blasphemous by bystanders and the man himself.

Report said what followed was that it developed into a serious issue as Ammaye was dragged to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where she was interrogated, and allegedly repeated what she had earlier said to the infuriation of the mob.

The latter reportedly descended on her, lynched her and set her ablaze.

“A report was received that one Amaye, a female resident of Kasuwan-Garba in Mariga LGA, allegedly made some utterances considered offensive to the Islamic faith. Her comments quickly provoked anger among members of the community.

“Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack, and the woman was set ablaze before the reinforcement of security teams could arrive at the scene,” Niger State Police Command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, said in a statement he issued on the matter.
