The Lagos State Magistrate Court 5 sitting in Yaba has convicted, and sentenced a female beggar to two months imprisonment for using babies to beg within the state metropolis.
This was made known by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development in the State, Olusegun Dawodu while reiterating the ban on street begging and the use of babies and children for alms on Lagos streets.
Dawodu said the prohibition of the prevalent alm solicitation by the state government is in force.
Narrating how the law took its course in the matter of the convicted female beggar, the Commissioner said, the woman was in the business of soliciting alms with children at Herbert Macaulay area of Ebute-Metta over which she was arrested and prosecuted.
It followed that the court found her guilty as charged and sentenced her to two months imprisonment without the option of a fine.
