Worshipper beaten to death at Osun central mosque

A worshipper simply identified as Najeem was beaten to death at a central mosque in Osogbo, Osun State.

The incident happened early on Friday after the dawn (Fajr) prayer at the Ummu Haani Adigun Memorial Central Mosque, located on B.A. Adigun Street, Ayedun Estate, Ogo Oluwa Area of the state capital.

The victim was a car painter and father of two.

Eyewitnesses said he was part of the congregation and while the Imam was giving sermon trouble broke out between both.

He reportedly stood from the sitting position he was, removed microphone tripod stand and attempted to attack the Imam.

The latter it was said, ran out of out of the mosque to escape assault while some worshippers intervened in an attempt to restrain Najeem, but the situation developed into a violent struggle that spilled outside the mosque premises.

Report has it that he was beaten during the scuffle and later fell into a gutter in front of the mosque where he passed away.

This medium also gathered that the victim appeared aggressive and possibly intoxicated.

Sources added that due to the incident Jummah prayers were suspended, while police officers were deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident.
