The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Federal Government of hijacking key state institutions to push President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat.
The opposition party alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is planning to hand election logistics to a faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) linked to a longtime Tinubu ally, while the Lagos State Commissioner of Police openly appeared at the launch of the pro-Tinubu City Boy Movement.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the developments as a dangerous sign that institutions meant to remain neutral are being dragged into partisan politics.
According to him, the ruling APC is steadily erasing the line between party and government, with security agencies and other public institutions allegedly being used to advance Tinubu’s political interests ahead of the 2027 polls.
“The Nigerian state and the APC are becoming one and the same,” the party declared, accusing security chiefs of abandoning neutrality to become “political cheerleaders” for the President.
The ADC said nothing exposes the situation more than a serving Commissioner of Police attending a pro-Tinubu political event while reports suggest a Tinubu-linked NURTW faction could be entrusted with transporting election officials and sensitive voting materials.
Warning that such moves could destroy public confidence in the electoral process, the party demanded that INEC immediately explain its reported relationship with the transport union faction.
It also urged the Inspector-General of Police to state whether the Lagos police commissioner was authorised to attend the City Boy Movement launch.
The party insisted that if the officer acted without approval, disciplinary action should follow. But if his attendance was officially sanctioned, then police officers should be allowed to attend political events organised by every other political party.
ADC vowed to formally petition the INEC Chairman, insisting it would resist any arrangement capable of undermining the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
