Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that he would run a government where he would personally take charge if elected president in the 2027 election.
Obi, while reflecting on the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, said his approach to governance would be different.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC, the former Anambra State governor said Buhari was not fully in control of his government.
“He was not in charge. The difference is that I would be in charge,” Obi said.
The NDC candidate also promised to revisit the controversial fuel subsidy policy, arguing that corruption, rather than the subsidy itself, was the major problem.
Obi said his government would focus on eliminating corruption within the subsidy system instead of scrapping the subsidy altogether.
According to him, removing corruption from the process could significantly reduce the burden on the system and the resources being lost.
“If you are not stealing, if you are not involved, and your wife and family are not involved, then you reduce it by 50 per cent,” he said.
Obi said restoring the subsidy would therefore be part of his plan if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
“I’ll bring back the fuel subsidy and remove the corruption. Corruption is the problem,” he added.
